Shopping for Authenticity

As a Cleveland business owner and a native, I have grown up exploring all of the nooks and crannies that  Northeast Ohio’s diverse neighborhoods have to offer.

My parents allowed me to explore and gave me a passion for experiencing authentic experiences throughout our great region.

I look for authentic experiences when I shop in our region.  I go to independently owned restaurants, farms and shops.  I like to connect with the owners and learn from them.  When you can speak to a shop owner, a restaurateur, or a local farmer, they will teach you about their passions.  This gives me as a customer a great feeling and fulfillment in knowing that my dollars are spent supporting these passions and people in our community.  I am able to bring these passions and experiences to my business, which makes me a better restaurant owner.

Some of my favorite experiences are going to the Countryside Conservancy Farmer’s Market in the Cuyahoga Valley (every Saturday from 9am until noon) after exercising on the towpath.  I love visiting the local farms in this area including Greenfield Berry Farm in Peninsula and Goatfeathers Point Farm (turkeys and goats).

I also enjoy going to Ohio City…I start my day at Rising Star Coffee, then stop at the Transformer Station (great collection of Photography created by Fred and Laura Bidwell), then lunch at Nate’s Deli (great Shish Tawook, Hummus and Taboule).

I love to go to the North Union Farmer’s Market at Shaker Square on Saturdays, I meet up with Savery Rorimer from Snake Hill Farm in Geauga County (my maple syrup supplier), then Scott Boehnlein from New Creation Farm (pork supplier) and Matt Vodraska from Rittman Orchards (seasonal fruits and vegetables), There are many great artisans who sell their crafts too!

After many fun discussions, I head to fire food and drink for brunch (my restaurant on Shaker Square where we make everything from scratch using the best local ingredients).

I live in Cleveland Heights with my wife Karen and my twins Abe and Amelia.  We walk our dog Henry to Coventry for great yogurt at Piccadilly, we eat sushi at Pacific East, love Tommy’s for onion soup and yummy sandwiches.

We also walk to Lee Road often. Right down the street is The BottleHouse, a local brewery and cool brewpub.  Down from there is the Cedar Lee Theatre and the list goes on and on…

I love Northeast Ohio and know it is because I connect with my community and make intentional decisions to support the people of my community.

Happy Shopping!
