Kindness in CLE: Look Inside The Greater Cleveland Food Bank

GCFB-5897

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our community has the nutritious food they need. Located on South Waterloo Road, in the Collinwood neighborhood, our 128,000 square-foot facility and warehouse can be seen from I-90.

You’ve probably passed our building on your way into the city many times, but never realized what was going on inside.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank serves residents of six counties in Northeast and North Central Ohio including Ashland, Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Richland. Throughout this six-county service area, we serve 247,000 different people annually through our over 800 partner agencies.

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative through Feeding America that raises awareness of the issue of hunger in our communities.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank engages members of our community in a number of different ways throughout the month. Our goal is always to get the public to take action to help the hundreds of thousands of people in the area who don’t always know where their next meal is coming from.

Our team has been working hard to bring on a variety of partners in the community to help raise awareness and funds during the month of September.

Cleveland Clothing Company has designed a “Cleveland Foodie” t-shirt and will be donating 20% of the proceeds to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. They are also hosting a canned food drive on our behalf. Customers can bring in a canned food item to receive a 5% discount on any purchase in the downtown store. In addition, the Wandering Wardrobe will be donating a portion of their sales throughout the month of September to the Food Bank and Browns Running Back Isaiah Crowell is donating 20% of sales from his “Feed the Crow” t-shirts.

“Food Trucks at the Food Bank” series:

Something new to Hunger Action Month for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is our “Food Trucks at the Food Bank” series.

Every Tuesday of the month we will be hosting area food trucks in our parking lot for lunch. A percentage of sales will come back to us in support of Hunger Action Month. The event is open to the public, and we encourage people to join us this month for lunch at the Food Bank and to learn more about how we are working to solve hunger.

There are many other ways for Clevelanders to get involved with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. We have a number of different volunteer opportunities at the Food Bank that could include repacking goods in our warehouse or helping to prepare meals in our kitchen. On average, we have about 14,000 volunteers a year which is a testament to the philanthropic nature of this city.

Another way to become involved with the Food Bank is through advocacy efforts. We ask friends of the Food Bank to reach out to their local, state, and national elected officials to encourage them to support legislation that brings food to those who need it most.

Advocating on our behalf is made easy by our Director of Advocacy who gives step by step directions for contacting politicians who have the power to make a difference.

Taste of the Browns:

Finally, Northeast Ohioans can get involved and support the Food Bank by attending events. We hold two large fundraisers each year, Market at the Food Bank in the spring and Taste of the Browns, which is coming up on September 21st.

Both events feature food and drinks from the best area restaurants. We are fortunate to have one of the best foodie towns in the country, and local chefs and restaurant owners are great supporters of our mission.
